Special Issue:Driver Behavior, Highway Capacity and Transportation Resilience
Transportation plays a vital role both in urban economy and usual lives, which was recognized as one of the major functions of the city, along with dwelling, work, and recreation. As an organic system, urban traffic has attracted increased attention during recent years. However, the majority of studies focused on roadways and vehicular technologies, and limited research has been conducted to address the driver characteristics and their impact. A major possible reason is the scarcity of reliable data. In fact, data required to address driver behavior may include various hierarchy choices from large samples. Moreover, the characteristics and behavioral datasets have to be collected in a sequential, consistent, and accurate way. Traditional traffic data obtained from cross-sectional detectors as well as video capture devices are not sufficient to fully capture driver behavior. Only in the recent years, with the availability of transportation-related ¡°big data¡± and particular the overwhelming information onboard and from roadside facilities, the impacts of driver behavior may be investigated in more detail. In general, driver behavior in microscopic level may include car-following, lane-changing, and gap acceptance models, which are believed largely to affect the capacity of the roads. Furthermore, safety concerns especially when driving in an urban environment due to the interaction of different modes, increase the complexity of quantifying the quality of service of various transportation facilities. These potential complexities in driver behavior challenge academia to develop supporting models and methods of analysis.
A special issue in the international journal -Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering on ¡°Driver Behavior, Highway Capacity and Transportation Resilience¡± is being organized. The scope of this Special Issue will include model development as well as empirical data collection and advanced quantitative analysis within the context of driver behavior and highway capacity and transportation resilience, so as to achieve better system performance. The topics of interest include, but not limited to, the following:
Driver behavior and traffic flow characteristics
Traffic simulation and highway capacity analysis
Planning and cooperation of intermodal transport
ECO drive mode and sustainable transportation
Green transportation and transportation system resilience
Applications on Internet of Vehicles (IOV) and other urban transportation related ¡°Big Data¡±, including mobile phone, blue tooth, E-toll and transit IC cards, etc.
