Abstract:
In order to improve the capacity and safety of twoway eightlane highway during maintenance, combing with field engineering project, traffic simulation model for maintenance construction work zone of Nanjing to Shanghai Highway (NSH) was established by VISSIM software. Four major traffic influencing traffic factors, such as traffic volume in cross section, number of closed lanes, speed limit and length of the working area were analyzed in NSH. Traffic delay and traffic conflict indicators of 72 combinations of different variables were calculated. Prediction models for traffic delays, traffic conflicts and closed lanes, speed limits, and work area lengths under specific traffic conditions were established. The results show that traffic volume, number of closed lanes and length of work zone have significant effects on traffic delay. With one lane closed, 1 100 veh/h per lane traffic volume is a significant demarcation point. Traffic delay growth rate of each interval is about 20% to 30% with lower traffic volume, and is up to 100% with higher traffic volume. With two lanes closed, traffic volume with 650 veh/h per lane is a significant demarcation point. Traffic volume and number of closed lanes have significant impacts on the traffic conflicts, whose changing rule is similar to traffic delays, but changing range is wider. The recommended traffic organization are combination with 2 lanes closed, 80 km/h speed limit and 4 km of work zone length when traffic volume is less than 500 veh/h per lane, and combination with 1 lane closed, 80 km/h speed limit and 4 km of work zone length, when traffic volume is between 500 to 800 veh/h per lane. Combination with 1 lane closed, 60 km/h speed limit and 2 km of work zone length when traffic volume is more than 1 000 veh/h per lane for NSH. It is not recommended to construct with lanes closed around the clock. Reasonable traffic organization can be changing according to the hourly traffic volume coefficients. In the future, other factors such as horizontal/vertical alignments and pavement evenness of different sections can be taken into account, to make the simulation results be more accurate and conform to field conditions. 8 tabs, 11 figs, 26 refs.
