Abstract:
It is very difficult to study the pile foundation in slope by the traditional method because there exists free surface in it. By employing the geotechnical centrifuge based on the theory of similarity, the pile foundation is studied by reducing the dimensions of the prototype. In the centrifugal tests, the horizontal and vertical loads are exerted on end-bearing pile and friction pile respectively by the loading devices developed by the authors. The research methods and mechanic mechanism are presented. The test results indicate that the differences between the mechanic features of two pile foundations are little. The friction pile is not proper to be used as pile foundation in slope because of the poor performance when it is subjected to the vertical loads and it can bring a large perturbation for the soil around the pile. 1 tab, 14 figs, 13 refs.
