- Abstract:
- In order to deeply understand the influence of multilane traffic flow characteristics on the efficient, safe and stable operation of road facilities, the theory and application of multilane traffic flow in recent years were reviewed, from the perspectives of theoretical research, technical development and engineering application. The quantitative indicators and their influence factors were introduced to measure the longitudinal passage capacity and transverse distribution of multilane traffic flow. The relationships between the indicators and the traffic flow characteristics were also revealed. The modeling methods and typical researches were summarized on microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic multilane traffic flow. Moreover, the traditional and novel traffic control methods of multilane traffic flow were introduced, according to their intelligence levels. Based on the analysis and discussion of previous studies, future improvement directions were pointed out which cover the aspects of multilane traffic flow monitoring, modeling, and control. The results show that the research of this field will be carried out from the following aspects, study the multisource driven traffic flow monitoring method, the traffic design should be proposed which can reduce traffic flow distribution unbalance, lane changing model should be improved by balancing its generality and specificity, the macroscopic traffic flow model should be able to model the influence of lane changing flow or random movements of individual vehicles in higher accuracy, the modeling methods of macroscopic, mesoscopic, and microscopic traffic flow should mutually share their merits, the research and application of traditional multilane traffic control methods, such as lanescale traffic signal control and dynamic lane grouping, and the intelligent and networking technologies should be introduced in multilane traffic control to extend the study domain of this topic. 68 refs.
