- Abstract:
- In order to analyze the effect of molding method on pavement performances of open-graded large stone asphalt mixes (OLSM) and recommend the reasonable forming methods for different utilization, the influences of molding method and specimen specification on the pavement performances of OLSM such as porosity, aggregate gradation, shearing strength and elastic modulus were studied based on the results of Marshall test, splitting test and penetration test. The results show that specimen specification has a significant impact on technical characteristics of OLSM. The Φ152.4 mm specimen is better reflecting the compaction characteristics and strength of OLSM than Φ101.6 mm specimen. Molding method has a significant impact on aggregate gradation of OLSM. The aggregate breakings are not remarkably influenced by the forming methods of Marshall hit, rotary compaction and wheel rolling, but it is remarkably influenced by the static pressure method. Molding method has a significant impact on technical characteristics of OLSM. Specimen’s Marshall stability is basically the same as the actual value of the pavement by the forming method of Marshall hit, rotary compaction and wheel rolling, but it is much less than the actual value of the pavement by the static pressure method. The specimen mechanical strength is basically the same as the actual value of the pavement by the forming method of wheel rolling. However, it is much less than the actual value of the pavement by the forming method of Marshall hit, rotary compaction and static pressure. When determining the technical characteristics of OLSM, it’s better to use the Φ152.4 mm specimen, but not to use the Φ101.6 mm specimen. When designing composition of OLSM, it’s appropriate to use the molding method of Marshall hit or rotary compaction. When designing mechanical strength of OLSM, it’s better to use the molding method of wheel rolling.
