Abstract:
Pavement rutting, fatigue cracking and thermal cracking that are the main diseases of asphalt pavement, were chosen as the main indicators of pavement performance-based design method. Combined with traffic load, environment, material composition, surface structure mechanical response, pavement deformation of each pavement layer was estimated, and top-down cracking, bottom-up cracking, thermal cracking of asphalt layer were analyzed. Then, the pavement performance analysis was applied to compute the life-cycle benefits and costs, and to select maintenance scheme. Based on the above analysis, this paper proposed pavement performance based life-cycle design method of asphalt pavement and presented the design process. The pavement rutting and crack of Shi'an expressway was predicted, and compared with measured values, and the new pavement structure was designed with this study. The results show that there is small difference between predicted values and measured values of pavement rutting and top-down cracking, with the deviation less than 20%; there is relatively large difference between predicted values and measured values of bottom-up cracking and thermal crocking, with the deviation larger than 40%; there is better applicability of PCI predicted values. There is better applicability of this study to asphalt pavement design, and which reaches the goal of designing pavement from the perspective of life-cycle and unifying pavement structure design and materials design. 6 tabs, 2 figs, 14 refs.
