- Abstract:
- To study the evaluation methods and lowtemperature performance of a RA1 finished product rubber asphalt mixture in an alpine region, a test along the south section of the SichuanTibet Highway was selected as the support construction. The strength, aging and freezethaw cycle effect of the asphalt mixture through laboratory tests such as the beam bending, splitting, aging, and freezethaw cycle tests were used to analyze the low temperature performance of a the RA1 rubber asphalt mixture and provide a reasonable performance evaluation standard at low temperature. The results show that when the temperature is from -5 ℃ to 0 ℃, the maximum bending strain of the RA1 rubber asphalt mixture show a greater increase of approximately 34.4%. When the loading rate is 2 mm/min, the splitting test can reflect the damage process of the mixture at low temperature. With an increase in temperature, the maximum bending strain and cleavage strength of the mixture following shortterm aging are greater than that after longterm aging. After approximately 20 freezethaw cycles, the splitting tensile strength of the mixture attenuation trend gradually stabilizes. After 40 freezethaw cycles, the maximum bending strain of the mixture decreases by 13.9%, compared to that of the initial state. A splitting test is suitable to evaluate low temperature performance for the new mixture, and the loading rate is appropriate for an adjustment of 2 mm/min. A lowtemperature bending test is suitable to evaluate lowtemperature performance of the mixture after longterm aging, and the loading rate is appropriate for an adjustment of 15 mm/min. A freezethaw splitting test is suitable to evaluate the lowtemperature performance for the mixture with freezethaw action and the loading rate is appropriate for an adjustment of 2 mm/min. The RA1 finished rubber asphalt mixture is suitable for road surfaces in the Sichuan alpine region. 4 tabs, 8 figs, 24 refs.
